Transportation, Traffic & Parking at M-A

Especially at the beginning of the school year, please plan on arriving earlier in the morning as the student drop-off zone will be congested. You might also want to come 10 to 15 minutes after the afternoon bell for pick-up to avoid waiting. Please remember to pull as far forward in the zone as possible before stopping so that other parents can reach the passenger loading area.

Practicing patience and courtesy will make the process smoother and safer for all students!

School Drop-Off and Pick-Up:

The only area designated for student drop-off and pick-up is on the school drive along the front of the school. (See Campus Map.) The only entrance is off Ringwood Avenue and this entrance is also used to access the student parking at the corner of Middlefield and Ringwood. There are three exits: one is at the Ringwood entrance; the second is closer to Middlefield and exits onto Ringwood; the third exits onto Oak Grove Ave. There is no entrance off of Oak Grove other than for the staff parking lot. The entrance at Middlefield and Ravenswood is a pedestrian entrance only.

The following tips will make the process easier for all of us and safer for our students!

  • There are several areas that allow drop-off and pick-up along the front drive - by the PA Center, the Administration Building, and the B & C wings.
  • Parking lots around campus are for permit parking only and not drop-off and pick-up.
  • You must stay in your vehicle when parked at the curb during drop-off and pick-up. If you need to leave your vehicle, you must park in a visitor parking space. See the Parking section below for directions.
  • There are two lanes of traffic at the exit to Oak Grove, one to turn right and the other to turn left onto Oak Grove. Please do not park in this area and block the traffic flow.
  • For the safety of all students, please:
    • DO NOT drop-off and pick-up on Oak Grove adjacent to M-A, or any other areas that may be marked with no drop-off signs.
    • DO NOT let your student get out of the car and cross the street in the middle of the block, especially across Middlefield! Tell your student to cross at an intersection, preferably with a traffic light, and caution them NOT to cross Middlefield in the middle of the block.
    • DO NOT stop in the SRI Conference Center parking entrance to let out your student as you WILL be creating a dangerous situation for the cars and bicycles coming behind you.

These situations, and worse, have all been observed and create a dangerous situation for your student and others. Let's all work to keep everyone on campus safe!

Mass Transit Options:

Information on bus routes and schedules can be found here. This link shows which Sam-Trans bus routes serve the local high schools, and there is a link to the schedules. The Campus Map shows the location of the bus stops by campus.

Youth fares (ages 17 and under) are $1 cash for single ride tickets. A monthly pass may be purchased for $29, or 10 tokens for $8. The passes are sold from the 21st of each month until the 7th of the following month. To locate a vendor near you, click here.

If you're interested in taking the train, visit CalTrain for schedules and fares. The train station is a short walk down Ravenswood from campus.

Bicycles:

Students who ride bicycles to school may park them in the bike cage located next to the blacktop basketball courts. The bike cage is locked five minutes before brunch and is opened after school. Students should use their own sturdy bike lock to prevent thefts. Park at your own risk and only in the designated area.

Parking:

Parent and visitor parking is restricted to two areas on campus, both near the pedestrian entrance off of Middlefield. If you need to park at M-A, please obtain a one-day temporary parking permit in the Administration Building and place it on your dashboard. The permit may be picked up in advance.

Parking without a permit may result in a parking ticket. Parking tickets are issued by the Atherton Police Department or the Menlo Park Police Department and the school has no ability to rescind them.

Tutors and other regular school volunteers may be able to obtain an annual parking pass. The program chair should contact the AVP office.

Students may purchase a student parking permit on a space-available basis. Application forms can be found in the AVP office. Student parking is allowed in 2 lots - the lot at the corner of Ringwood and Middlefield, and in the Gym parking lot.

Parking for evening and weekend events is available in any legal space in any school parking lot without a permit. For some all-school events, such as Open House, parking may also be available in the SRI conference center parking lot at the corner of Middlefield and Ravenswood. Parking is not allowed in the SRI lot at other times.
