Volunteering at M-A is a terrific way to learn about the school while offering much-needed help. Opportunities at M-A are plentiful, ranging from:

  • PTA board and committee chair positions
  • Helping committee chairs for an hour or a few hours on the day of an event, or working on a sub-committee to plan an event
  • Committing to a year-long tutoring program to help ELD (English Language Development) students
  • Being a parent representative on the SDMSC - Shared Decision-Making Site Council
  • Supporting the M-A administration on short-term projects, such as proctoring an AP exam or coordinating paperwork for the Star Tests

In other words, there's something for everyone no matter how much time you can commit! To learn more about how you can help, contact the following PTA representatives or see the current volunteer ops below:

Current Volunteer Ops at M-A:

ELD (English Language Development) Tutoring: Once or twice a week volunteers work with students who have limited English language skills, some of whom are quite new to the US. The goal is to encourage conversation and help with reading, comprehension, and vocabulary. This is a rewarding job and an opportunity to work directly with our students, build relationships, and make a difference in their struggles to navigate high school in a foreign language. Knowledge of a second language is not necessary.

Tutoring for the 2011-12 school year has begun, and we welcome additional tutors in three ELD classes. Please contact Andrea Reid if you want more information.

M-A Academy Mentors to work with Juniors: The Menlo-Atherton High School Academy is a small school-within-a-school program that strives to create a nurturing environment where students can develop a love of learning and acquire the academic, personal and critical thinking skills needed in today's information-based society. To help these students reach their long term goals, our junior students are partnered with mentors from career fields that interest them. As a mentor, you will be paired with a student to help them plan their future through a series of guided activities.

Please contact Chris Rubin at crubin@seq.org if you are interested or would like more information. Thank you!

After-School Homework Center Tutors: We are looking for volunteer tutors to assist in after-school homework centers. Students need help completing assignments in Math, English, Science and Social Studies. We have a wonderful group of students who are willing and able to work hard to achieve success.  Please help to ensure graduation for all of our students.  The Homework centers are already staffed with teachers, text book clerks, and instructional associates. However, we are experiencing an increase in the amount of students who are willing to work hard on homework after school. Please join us by sharing your knowledge with these wonderful students during these times:

Monday: 2:30 - 4  p.m.
Tuesday: 2:30 - 4 p.m.
Thursday: 1:40 - 3:30 p.m.

Please contact Andy Stuart at astuart@seq.org or at (650) 322-5311 x5252.

AVID Program Tutors Needed: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is looking for college age or other adult volunteers to work with our students during tutorial periods. Tutors need not be experts in any one subject, just patient and able to facilitate a small study group (with training and support from the AVID teachers). Most tutorials happen on Wednesday and Thursday during the block periods. One training session outside of school hours will be held TBA. If you are interested, please contact Rachel Andres at randres@seq.org or (650) 521-2406.

Speakers Needed to Share Your Career Experience: Would you like to share your enthusiasm for your career with teens headed for college?  AVID is a program for students in the middle who are individually motivated to go to college but may lack skills or are under-represented or are first generation college students. This class prepares students to be eligible to apply and succeed in a four year university. If you love your job and would like to share your path with interested students, please contact Mrs. Burton-Tillson at cburton@seq.org. Preferred presentation days are Fridays but all days are available.  Currently the AVID classes are looking specifically for speakers for these occupations (but we welcome any careers!)
